Show Record: Famous Portuguese families have bred Lusitanos for decades. The leading families, whose name is shared by the lines of horses they produce, are Veiga and Andrade. Two other lines, Coudelaria Nacional and Alter Real make up the four Lusitano lines. Piloto is bred from the Veiga line on his sire’s side and the Andrade and Coudelaria Nacional lines on his dam’s side. His pedigree goes back to Agareno a Veiga head of lineage. The Veiga horses are real Portuguese; they have been bred for centuries out of ancient Portuguese lines.
Andrade horses have more Spanish blood and are known as slightly bigger and a bit easier. The Coudelaria Nacional (national stud) has used Spanish blood as well like Habanero VIII, (a horse on Piloto’s Dams side) especially because a few decades ago the Spanish and Portuguese studbooks used to be one common studbook. Then the Spanish wanted to create their own (Andalucian) studbook, especially to be able to breed on a larger scale for export. This was not always an advantage for the quality of the horses. The Portuguese continued on their own way, which resulted in a quite closed breed, which was hardly known outside Portugal. Recently, the Spanish wanted to combine the two studbooks again – which the Portuguese didn’t want, but which says enough about the quality of the Lusitanos!
Piloto’s sire Eleito, was Champion of Champions in 1989 in Golega.
The Portuguese have sought to keep the historic characteristics of the Lusitano intact. Lusitanos have an aptitude for “La Gineta,” the ancient equestrian art defined by the necessities of mounted single combat or its contemporary replacements: bull fighting, dressage, jumping. Lusitanos make excellent riding horses due to their levelheaded temperament and tendency to bond strongly with humans. They are intelligent, sensible, and have great balance.
The Veiga stud farm, always has had a great concern over the stallions chosen. The studs, which were selected, were the ones with the best gait. They also had to be able to guarantee the well-known studfarm´s characteristics. After a patient wait, Veiga was able to obtain from his work, horses similar to the famous ones, which existed in ancient Iberia , selected during thousands of years to be war horses. The strong Veiga horses inbreeding, gives them a big aptitude to mark their lineage and because of it, they can pass on the Veiga horses characteristics, that's the reason why, they are often used to improve a large number of others stud farms. That’s also the reason why their blood is very important nowadays, having a recognized role in Lusitanian horse's breeding in Portugal and abroad.
Piloto possesses the fine breeding and classic qualities of the Lusitano. He is passing these attributes on to his offspring.
